Editorial Methodology, SAE J2807 Standards & Testing Protocols

Truck Specs was established by automotive journalists, mechanical engineers, and off-road racers to provide definitive, uncompromised, and computationally reproducible vehicle specifications.

The SAE J2807 Towing Testing Protocol

Before the adoption of Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standard J2807, North American truck manufacturers published unregulated, self-calculated towing capacities. Marketing departments frequently manipulated baseline trim curb weights, tire sizes, and rear-axle ratios to advertise headline numbers that no customer could safely achieve.

Truck Specs evaluates towing capabilities exclusively under certified SAE J2807 procedures. To earn an 8,380-pound tow rating, the 2025 Ram 1500 RHO had to successfully complete standardized torture testing, including:

  • The Davis Dam Grade Ascent: The truck must ascend Arizona Highway 68 from Bullhead City to Kingman (an 11.4-mile continuous 7.0% grade rising from 550 to 3,500 feet of elevation) in ambient temperatures of at least 100°F (38°C) with the air conditioning set to maximum, sustaining at least 40 mph without engine overheating or transmission fluid thermal breakdown.
  • Acceleration Benchmarks Under Full GCWR: With a fully loaded 8,380-pound trailer at the truck’s 14,000-pound maximum GCWR, the vehicle must accelerate from 0 to 30 mph in under 12.0 seconds and 0 to 60 mph in under 30.0 seconds on a flat grade.
  • Stopping Distance & Park Brake Hold: The truck-and-trailer combination must come to a complete emergency stop from 20 mph in under 80 feet, and the mechanical parking brake must securely hold the loaded combination both facing uphill and downhill on a 12.0% incline.

10Hz GPS Telemetry & Environmental Normalization

Vehicle acceleration metrics published on this portal are recorded or cross-verified using 10Hz dual-constellation (GPS + GLONASS) satellite telemetry equipment, specifically Dragy and Racelogic VBOX hardware.

Standard factory test procedures deduct a 1-foot rollout (approximately 11.5 inches of initial vehicle creep across optical laser staging lights). In contrast, consumer Dragy devices allow user selection between rollout-deducted times (representing optimal prepped NHRA drag strip conditions) and true standing 0-foot launches (representing real-world street launches on public roads).

Furthermore, forced-induction twin-turbocharged engines like the Hurricane 3.0L are exceptionally sensitive to ambient air density. All instrument tests recorded by our desk are normalized to standard sea-level atmospheric pressure (14.7 PSI / 101.3 kPa) and 59°F (15°C) according to SAE J1349 weather correction formulas.

Data Integrity, Peer Review & Trademark Notices

All technical dimensions, gear ratios, fluid capacities, torque curves, and statutory weight limits are extracted directly from official manufacturer Service Technical Manuals (STMs), Stellantis North America engineering press kits, and Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) certification placards affixed to vehicle B-pillars.

When vehicle revisions, software updates, or Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) alter vehicle parameters (e.g. ECU recalibrations or towing adjustments for the 2026 model year), our research desk updates canonical database records within 24 hours. Readers and engineers may submit telemetry logs or specification corrections directly to our editorial review desk via technical verification tickets.
